"Glowry" for Glory

According to the Online Etymo Dictionary, glory from L. via O.Fr., was used to translate a Heb. word from the Bible meaning “brightness, splendor, magnificence, majesty”. Glowry emphasizes the glow.

Re: "Glowry" for Glory

Oooooh. Good one.

“Glowery” has other meanings. It is used as an adjective for “something that glowers.” Glowery weather is gloomy weather. So transforming “glory” to “glowery” inadvertently turns the word into its antonym. We can add this to our list of acorn/eggcorn antonyms. These include, among others, yield/wield, ceases/seizes to be, tenacity/temerity, touch and go/touch and goal and qualm/calm.
