Re: "Monica" for moniker

So tennis wunderkind Seles uses the monica Monica? If the chosen name is funny, is it a harmonica?

For somebody who gripes about people’s puns, kem!

Pure Lehmann; works just fine for me.

I only take issue with other people’s puns.

Wasn’t that Sartre’s famous line? “L’enfer c’est les puns des autres.”

“L’enfer c’est les puns des autres.”

I was just going to mention that quote. You’ve beaten me to the puns again.

Re: "Monica" for moniker

I can hardly believe I registered so that I may begin my forays on this forum by responding to a post of such antiquity; yet, such is the case. No doubt this same kind of response has previously occurred. I refer to the elusive “Boston accent,” which could be offered as a cause of many misspellings and seemingly garbled pronunciations. As a non-native but long-time resident of the Boston area, I am subject daily to its speech patterns, which even after three-and-a-half decades can still jar me. All jarring aside, though, it’s easy to see how “moniker” might drop-jaw locally as “Monica.” Turn it around and “Monica” easily errs into “moniker.” Nothing to see here, folks. Move along. Does this mean I’m defending the usage? I’m not sure. We do have a couple of people here whose moniker is Monica – and I have heard their names said both ways.

Re: "Monica" for moniker

But if somebody thinks the word meaning “(whimsical) name” comes from the name “Monica”, we have some sort of eggcorn, whatever pronunciations are involved. Something to see here folks.

And welcome, bluecrab.
