This post collects some recent appearances of the word “eggcorn†on the net.
Another GrammarMonkeys tweet suggests that “rearing to go†may be an eggcorn. I’m not sure what the point is. “To rare†and “to rear†are variants of the same word. If “to rear†were understood as a verbification of the adjective/noun “rear†(i..e, “behindâ€), then “rearing to go†would be some kind of oxymoron, based perhaps on the infamous career of Jubilation T. Cornpone.
There has been some recent activity on a new facebook community page on eggcorns. Is the company that wants to privatize the web trying to grab our space?
Someone is trying to commercialize eggcorns. So far all they are offering is a t-shirt with the phrase “Malamanteau. It’s notable.†“Malamanteau†is a word that gained some notoriety a few weeks ago when it appeared in a fake Wikipedia entry drawn for a comic strip. An article by Erin McKean in the Boston Globe explains the controversy. The word is a malapropism/portmanteau/curious self-reference/invented controversy-take your pick-but it’s not an eggcorn.

Aha, so that’s what raring to go means.
The “new facebook community page” is a tacky ripoff of the Wikipedia page.
The “what makes an official word” angle, and the instantaneous reconstruction of reality fostered by the web, are interesting, but “malamanteau” to my ear is a blend of maladroit and portmanteau.
