Here’s another non-standard usage I discovered through self-examination. I was writing an email, and came up with the line…
No criticism of your semantic slips from this quarter, Pat. Today the mote in your eye became the log in mine. I was working on a book chapter and I wrote–meant to write–the phrase “brought to life.†What I actually typed was “brought to like.â€
Kind of works, if you think about it. Bringing something to life can be bringing it into the circle of our affections, our likes.
Lots of examples of the “brought to like/brought to life†switch on the web. Four of them:
Food blog: “The sea bass filet was everything I could have asked for; rather than saturating the mild layers of white flesh with heavy cream or butter, it was subtly grilled and brought to like by the popping of accents like tangy reduced red onions, chewy sweet apricots, smoky toasted almonds and salty crisp capers.â€
Blog movie review: “Watch the movie if you want to see Magneto superbly brought to like by the one and only Gandalf. â€
Audio forum comment: “This was brought to like by my partner and I in Oct. 2006 at the AES convention. â€
Wine review: “Our terrior and clonal diversity is brought to like in this beautiful vintageeâ€

Yes. In fact, you make me wonder whether I really meant to type “brought to light.” That’s a much closer sound match.
