'coach potato' for 'couch potato'

Perhaps a coach potato is a couch potato who pretends to advise the teams and players while he watches his televised sports. Quite common. Examples:

Re: 'coach potato' for 'couch potato'

This one hits close to home during the World Cup. My Brazilo-Italian friend confuses “couch” and “coach” irremediably. I always assumed it was a confusion with coach seats or with a carriage of some sort.

Nice find, Ken – definitely low hanging fruit. And I bet there are other variations still out there. Crouch potatoes, for instance, are people who just crouch on their sofas and sit staring at the TV. This is pretty strongly a regionalism – most of the citations below were written by people living in Singapore or Malaysia, though I did find one from a fellow Californian (not included here). “A crouch potato” gets over 80 ughits, so there have to be many more out there if you drop the article or use a plural. Examples:

Or you happen to be a crouch potato that prefers watching the matches from the comfort of your drawing room?

She appreciates spending time purposefully, whether it is with her family, meeting up with some of her closest friends or even hibernating at home; and she also takes pleasure in being a crouch potato at home watching a good comedy, an inspirational movie, a documentary or even a good cartoon just to “wind down” (plus all the chocolates and tidbits).

Some of us upon reaching the office, will sit down and be glued to the chair like a crouch potato until the office hour is over.

Face it. There’s a crouch potato lurking in everyone of us.

For your information, I have been a crouch potato for two months and I can really get used to living like this..

There are also dozens of hits for “grouch potato,” but most of those are either puns or they’re referring to something slightly different – a person who sits around sulking or complaining.
