‘Abet’ is a natural target for eggcorning, since nobody remembers what it means. Pat S. had previously discovered the delightful ‘aiding and abedding.’ ‘Aid and abate’ is more common. ‘Abate’ has a connotation of providing relief, as when one abates an environmental problem, which provides a semantic justification for the substitution. Examples:

These examples differ in an important way: in the first two or three “abate†seems to still mean “mitigate†and thus conceivably “provide relief fromâ€, and “aid†must mean “aid in the fight against†rather than “promote, aid in the accomplishment ofâ€. In the last two or three, the meaning “provide relief to†fits better. The fourth one is most nearly the construction most central to the “aid and abet†construction, when one aids and abets a person rather than an event. In all the others the subject is construed as abating an event undesired by the subject; in the last the subject may be abating an event undesired by speaker and hearer though tolerated by the subject.

Put another way, in the first two it is a good thing to aid and abate the bad process (of global warming/climate change); in the others it is a bad thing to aid and abet the bad process.

It’s a toughy because there’s no semantic justification for it, it’s an easy typo to make and a spell-checker might suggest it for ‘abeting’.

“Abet” seems to be a particularly fecund incubator of reshapings. We also had kimberlydunn2’s suggestion of “aiding and abiding” a few weeks ago. And people are also out there beating and biting those they aid:
