“Cut a sorry finger” is modelled on cut a sorry figure, but it was difficult for me to understand what the users were trying to get at with this. It is almost exclusively South Asian. There are hints that it is being understood as unavoidable public disgrace, a digital hara kiri, since they say, for example, “India had to cut a sorry finger,” which does not make sense if resubstituted with figure. It may also be an expression of regret (they are sorry rather than pathetic). There might be a connection to getting your fingers burned. Tough one.

We know that all these excuses are lame and most of the people do not believe nor they can take these excuses as correct. We often have to cut a sorry finger and therefore, we must try to get freedom from these stresses and tensions.
