There is an expression ‘to make a good hand of it’ which I don’t know the origin of, something to do with cards? Or connected with ‘make a good fist of it’ (pugilism?) This could have got all twisted up with ‘get the hang of it (tailoring?) to bring about ‘get the hand of it’.
Any other hand/hang candidates? There are loads of hits for “hangcuffs” which conjure up those wall manacles that cartoon characters are suspended from.
