rack for wreck in "rack and ruin"

These words have been discussed a bit here, but apparently not the phrase “rack and ruin”, which seems a possible eggcorn. Like, “my grandmother’s house has gone to rack and ruin. Etymologists would “sort of” agree; but the issue with these (and many related) words is rather complex, and hundreds of years old. For a good discussion see:
