It’s possible that this is a deliberate misspelling, a pun. After mentioning his “two pits” the writer goes on to list two people who were (bad) exemplars-two “pits.”
Because of the dearth of spelling skills and the frequency of silicisms (e.g., typos), we prefer having several web citations before thinking of slips as eggcorns. Can you find other examples?
