Legions for lesions

“The early signs of these mites are legions along the margin of the leaves.” (http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/plants/prayer-p … ea/316203/) This could be a spelling mistake, but I think it is a new eggcorn. Given that a legion could consist of up to 6000 men (Wikpedia) a badly affected plant might suffer from legions of lesions?

Re: Legions for lesions

Sometimes you can locate a few more usages if you Google with a strategically constructed phrase. I extracted the below items using “with legions on” (including the quotation marks). Even so, for your find to qualify as an eggcorn, it would have to have been conjured up with some type of mistaken imagery on the part of the misquoter. Otherwise it would most likely fall in the malapropism category.

(I would also point out that there are probably as many interesting uses of “lesion” in place of “legion.” In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised to find “Lesionaire’s disease.” Here, for instance, the imagery would be that of a disease accompanied by lesions).
