"salvy" for savvy

Savvy is apparently derived from W. Indies pidgin for Fr. savez or Sp. sabe, “do you know?” It became a noun and an adjective, as in savvy investor. An alternate understanding of the word is possible, as salvy, which would be pronounced the same way, but would mean having the unguent. Web salvy students got the healing lotion. With this explanation, you can see why I put it here in slips.

Re: "salvy" for savvy

The need for such a soothing balm is widespread:

Students will extend their business literacy and computational skills, and develop skills in problem salving and financial management that will be of value …

I don’t know if you’re still keeping up with this but I haven’t salved the problem yet.

He bought a Houser stem with anti-vibe mount and that salved his problem!

I am searching the web whole day long to get sometihng useful, which would salve my problem. So far with no luck.

Well, we are here from sun rise to sun set and still we have not found a good way to salve our problem

Re: "salvy" for savvy

Perhaps it’s not the healing sense of a salve thats being invoked. Salves may have an oily look to them, so “salvy” might take on an imagery of slickness. So, when someone says he isn’t “tech salvy”, he may mean that he’s not too slick with new technology!

... that kinda makes me wonder how the usage “slick with” came into existence!
