A guy wire is a tensioned cable designed to add stability to a structure such as a ship’s mast. The use of “guy” in this term is perhaps puzzling to many. At least a “guide wire” guides a structure into the proper position.

Additionally an extra Eye strap was provided at the lower end of the mast where the bottom of the guide wire was to be attached. ...
