The ‘Coase Theorem,’ due to the renowned economist Ronald Coase, is the observation that, in the absence of transaction costs,free trade in externalities will lead to an efficient allocation of resources regardless of the initial allocation of property rights. Perhaps I’m reaching here, but Coase’s Theorem is a claim regarding the overall (or coarse) structure of the final allocation. It has been criticized for neglecting the fine structure of the allocation, i.e., the income of the individual bargainers, which does depend on the initial allocation of resources.
