Pinch black/Pitch black

I recall saying this one a lot as a child, and it always made sense to me. If you pinch someone hard enough, it should leave a pretty dark bruise, right? And bruises are black. Apparently pitch is too (and I knew a lot more about bruises than resin).

I suppose the connection is quite weak, but there was a time when it seemed pretty solid.
