Fifty of one or half a dozen of the other?

Clearly the origin of this phrase is a melange of “fifty/fifty” and “six of one a half dozen of the other”. Is it a valid eggcorn? Unable to find it in print, but hear it frequently.

Re: Fifty of one or half a dozen of the other?

I’ve heard a version of this: “half of one and six dozen of another”. . . , but as a joke.
