YES! An old girlfriend of mine made me cry with laughter when she told me that as a child she was convinced that was the correct expression. She did, in fact, have a very very old teddy bear that was rather mangy, and that she loved very much. She said it was good to know that everyone else had one too – even if only metaphorically.
From a different girlfriend comes the story of the school hymn about “Glady, the cross-eyed bear”. I think she kind of knew that couldn’t really be the right words, but liked the idea.
