Pushing muscle around

From the contributions forum, regarding “cowtailing” (for cowtowing)

“Concerned Aussie of Aust. Posted at 10:59 AM November 18, 2010
I am NOT a Falun Gong follower. But there seems to a point that most are missing, in that the Chinese government escorted an Australian civillain doing her job from an aircraft and was interrogated with no representation from the Australian Government present. QANTAS on the other hand has cowtailed to the Chinese Government who seem to be pushing their muscle around yet again”

With “pushing their muscle around” we have what appears to be a neat blend of “pushing their weight around” and “flexing their muscle”.

Re: Pushing muscle around

Nice catch
.
“Pushing their weight around” is, for me at least, in turn, a blend of “throwing their weight around” with “pushing people around” (or just being pushy.)
.
Blends are wonderful.

Re: Pushing muscle around

Are yes, I forgot “throwing” of weight around. I knew that something seemed clumsy about “pushing”. We usually say “throwing” in this phrase. (But we never push or throw our muscles)

Re: Pushing muscle around

There’s also “throwing your way around.” It seems a bit awkward to me, and I suspect that nearly all the users are non-native speakers. But it may make some sense – the person throwing their weight around is trying to “get their own way.” It seems to occur most in E Asia and SE Asia. Examples:

I guess the church just wants an “easy ” developing country where the y can still throw their way around and look good.

Thus the Mayweather Camp cannot throw their way around. Their “demands” cannot be the last say.

But we are told endlessly that the Russian economy is flourishing and that is the reason for President Putin throwing his way around in this ludicrous, school bully fashion.

The Database has entries for the roundtrippers way>><<weigh, but this is substantially different from those.
