The recent AWAD (A word a day) post of schmeer, for the emolument required to get gears turning, made me think of another one of my (admittedly large) number of personal eggcornical beliefs. I was living in a superposition of states, suspended between the need to crease and to grease someone’s palm. Creasing seemed the most logical, as well as least messy. Bills themselves crease, and the deposition of silver would also furrow the palm. And as always, I am not alone in my confusion.
This one is dedicated to Quebec’s politicians at all levels of government, who have been shown in the past few weeks to have heavily creased palms.
The clerk shrugged his shoulders and smiled. His hand was out hoping Jason would again crease his palm.

Having no cash on hand to pay the hotel expense, meant that possiblity of his “tip” evaporating. I did crease his aplm with some chinese yuan, which did bring some pleasure and happiness, however.

Thumbs away from the greasy crease, pointing upwards.
.
btw&fwiw, one of my favorite spoonerisms was the time my wife invited my brother to come in for some “chilled grease sandwiches and soupâ€. (Pronounced ‘greeze’, of course, which to my SC-trained ears sounds much greazier than the other pronunciation.)
