Kem’s post on jejeune hyperforeignisms contains a link to a Wikipedia page with a whole raft of them. The bit on bruschetta caught my eye: I love the stuff – toasted medieval bread lovingly rubbed with garlic, lovingly drizzled with oil and finally brutally schmeered with tomato pulp. In Italy, it is pronounced as Bruce Ketta, but one might be excused for thinking it pronounced Brew Shetta. Or Brushetta, “little brush”, since all the ingredients are lovingly brushed over the toasted bread. The Italian etymology indicates that roasting or toasting is involved, but no brushing.
