The Database has an early entry for Dachshund » Dashound, in which Sravana Reddy says, “It’s easy to see the source of the reanalysis… everyone knows that ‘hound’ is nearly synonymous with ‘dog’… and the eggcorners can’t really be blamed since (I think) ‘hund’ means dog (in German?)”.
For the same reason, it’s easy to see how, depending on dialect, you might be excused for thinking it’s a tautologous dogshund. Not too common, but does seem to be present in German, though maybe only to make fun of it. A Dutch friend told me that “dachshund” means something to do with hunting in tunnels, like a ferret.
What is a “salad bar” dog you ask? A little bit of this…and a little bit of that. In reality, I am pretty sure I am a mixture of 4 or 5 different types of terriers[possibly Jack Russell-Dogshund-Foxterrier and the like]

Undoubtedly many see and hear the word “dash” in “dachshund” and prove it by writing “dashound/dashhound.” I’m not sure, though, that everyone who says “DASH-hound” has in mind the semantics of “dashing.” I think “DASH-hund” is a common AmEng mispronunciation of “dachshund,” so common that it might even be considered an alternate pronunciation.
In German a badger is “der Dachs.” A dachshund is a “badger hound.”
“Dachshund” is frequently re-analyzed as “dutchhound.” See http://www.google.com/search?q=%22dutchhound%22 for samples. Perhaps people who use “dutchhound” think that it is a German dog? (or Dutch dog – Twentieth century English speakers often do not know that “dutch,” as it is used in historical phrases such as “Pennsylvania Dutch” and “double dutch,” are references to German speech or nationality, not to the language or people of the Netherlands.)

There are lots of these. I thought of looking at car forums to see if anyone was having trouble with their dachshund’s engine, but I decided against it.
