While watching public television as a child, I would often here that “this programming was brought to you by viewers like you.” For the longest time, I thought “brought to you” was the verb “brotchiued.” You know, I brotchiu, you brotchiu, he/she/it brotchius!

Most of the errors discussed thereon were in the context of reading rather than listening, though, and were pronunciation errors, but many of them were childhood misunderstandings like yours, some quite amusing. We all have had them during our formative years as we were learning the language.

Delightful reshaping. However, what’s required for a reshaping to be classified as an eggcorn is for it to convey an imagery which can be understood in literal terms. Unfortunately, “brotchiu” contains no universally understood meaning … but it is fun to say, and it is fun to ponder the language morphing in such a crazy way.
