This may be no more than an unusual misspelling as alternative imagery – the loved one has an eating disorder for example – is unconvincing. ‘Betroughed’ could work for marriages of a good few years duration, a seven-year itch in a ditch perhaps, but it is clear that no such intent is meant. Only 23 ghits (but all unique ones Pat – I agree we should use no other, despite duplicates creeping in even then).

Seven-year-itch in a ditch, eh? Here’s one more hit suggesting that this not a misspelling, but a normal part of human husbandry. The engagement is when the drinking starts.
