A melting pot is a metaphor for an environment which promotes the mixing of dissimilar elements (people, ideas, etc.). “Meld” is simply a blend of the two words melt and weld, so perhaps all bets are off for “melding pot” being an eggcorn. Or perhaps the utterer associates a stronger joining of elements with the word meld than with melt.

I was watching an interesting documentary called Tabloid tonight, and someone onscreen said something like ”...our two hearts were melted…”. I don’t recall the exact quote, but it was clear by the context that she meant “melded”. So it appears that the meld/melt confusion takes several forms.
