A “straw man” argument is one which is set up to advocate a particular, weak viewpoint to be torn down (like a straw man) before a stronger viewpoint is put forth. A “straw hat” argument conjures up the notion of an argument figuratively “woven” with weak pieces of straw (weak ideas).
