I’m thinking that the silliness of geese plays into the etymology of this eggcorn, with the idea that “proper gander” means official-sounding nonsense? Or maybe there’s some thought that it’s a shortened version of “proper gander crap” as in the last example?

The favorite is illuminating. Your citations are convincing. I looked for this one a while back, without separating it into two words, and so I was not convinced of its eggcornitude, but now I’m a believer. For what it’s worth, here are my two hits for the fused goose:
