Hang bag for handbag

Spotted this on someone’s Facebook status update

“Some shoes and hang bags chucked away not as many as Gareth would have liked”

and a quick and dirty Google search brings up other examples where it seems pretty clear “handbag” is meant but “hang bag” is used:

“Fashion’s most valuable secrets are always on… Bags and accessories… Shoes, hang bags, hats,¬†etc…” … terns.html

“They carry Mens, Ladies, Children and seasonal wear such as coats, hang bags and shoes.” … alles.html

“I love the variety of hang-bags, shoes, dresses, tops/bottoms, and jewelry galore to choose from.”

The eggcorning process looks pretty transparent: it’s a bag, it hangs off your arm (or your shoulder), it’s a hang bag. As no one since … re=related Dame Edith Evans has pronounced “hand bag” as two fully articulated words, I suspect “hang bag” and “handbag” in most people’s idiolects sound almost exactly the same, so it’s only when this one is written down that the eggcorn can be seen.

Re: Hang bag for handbag

Works for me! I like it!

*If the human mind were simple enough for us to understand,
we would be too simple-minded to understand it* .

(Possible Corollary: it is, and we are .)
