Spotted this on someone’s Facebook status update
“Some shoes and hang bags chucked away not as many as Gareth would have liked”
and a quick and dirty Google search brings up other examples where it seems pretty clear “handbag” is meant but “hang bag” is used:
“Fashion’s most valuable secrets are always on… Bags and accessories… Shoes, hang bags, hats, etc…”
http://yellowfd.blogspot.com/2011/10/20 … terns.html
“They carry Mens, Ladies, Children and seasonal wear such as coats, hang bags and shoes.”
http://www.associatedcontent.com/articl … alles.html
“I love the variety of hang-bags, shoes, dresses, tops/bottoms, and jewelry galore to choose from.”

The eggcorning process looks pretty transparent: it’s a bag, it hangs off your arm (or your shoulder), it’s a hang bag. As no one since http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gv9NER1x … re=related Dame Edith Evans has pronounced “hand bag” as two fully articulated words, I suspect “hang bag” and “handbag” in most people’s idiolects sound almost exactly the same, so it’s only when this one is written down that the eggcorn can be seen.
