"arabbiata" for arrabbiata

Yesterday, when I referred to the penne of Italy, arabbiata or otherwise, I used only one r for the sauce, because I thought that it was adapted from some spicy North African concoction, a fiery harissa or kin. When I took the trouble to look it up, I found to my delight that arrabbiata is Italian for angry. So rather than being Arabian, those are angry tubes.

There is a chain of restaurants in Egypt that play on that confusion: Arabiata.

I was so convinced of the truth of the same misconception that I would never have bothered to look it up. A quick search shows that we’re not alone. And strength to those angry tubes!
