“Four bears†could refer to the Goldilocks myth. Modern readers mistakenly think that the fairy tale was about three bears and one human child, but a closer reading of the old tale suggests an alternate interpretation. The bears of the story were not like modern bears – they sat on chairs, ate porridge, and slept in beds. When Goldilocks entered their cottage, she tried to make herself a bear by taking on traits of the story-defined urnsinity. As professor I. H. Kopfvogel points out in his article “Die postmoderne Rezeptionsästhetik und Kinder Mythos†The story title, “Goldilocks and the Three Bears,†was a later gloss. The original title was “Goldilocks, the Unsuccessful Fourth Bear.â€
