a tough road aho

Again, not spotted in the wild but remembered from 10th grade English. My English teacher told us that in his youth, he misunderstood

a tough row to hoe

as

a tough road aho

Makes sense either way.

Re: a tough road aho

A cross between “a tough row to hoe” and “a rough road ahead”?

Re: a tough road aho

I always heard this mis-ued as “A tough road to hoe” which sort of made sense especially to non-farmers who may never have heard the word “row”

Does anyone remember ‘There is no mayonaise in Ireland.’? That was the way some people heard ‘No man is an island’.

Re: a tough road aho

That’s silly – eveyone knows (a) Mayo is one of Ireland’s 32 counties and (b), yes, Man is an island, it’s in the middle of the Irish Sea, it’s famous for tailless cats and its capital is Douglas …

The road aho may be escaping from the eggcorn, like a sprout.

Her glory days behind her, she is now embarking on a hard road aho’.

I admit I still lust for a beautiful home with many acres however designer clothes and accessories and a designer job are seeming less appealing as living a more wholesome simple lifestyle. It’s a slow road aho, I’m still no pioneer woman.

Re: a tough road aho

Is this the same ho, as in ‘Land ho!’, as in the road aho? Or just rhyming reduplication? Or phonetic spelling in a land where final consonants have been discarded?

And lo and beho – not a word about it in the commercials! :headpalm:

Then lo and beho he show up several months later- seemed amused that we had been concerned about him- but never did explain his absence.
Vanishing posters and vanishing final d

After I took a break, I came back and installed the router on the other laptop and got it working on it and lo and beho, the windows 7 laptop was able to connect wirelessly.

Re: a tough road aho

A tough road I can see, but what does “aho” mean?

Re: a tough road aho

I think it means ahead. The road aho is the road that can be seen and hailed. Like, “Forward … ho”. And Tally-ho, the fox is seen.

Just guessing of course.
