"drug regiment" for "drug regimen"

It’s hard to believe that this hasn’t been posted yet (it’s probably buried in one of Ken’s earliest posts), so apologies in advance if I’m stepping on toes – Google didn’t bring anything up.

381 unique google hits for “drug regiment”; 76 ugh for “regiment of drugs.” Many k for the std. versions.

To anyone who’s ever been placed on a multi-drug regimen, that collection of little bottles can start looking like a veritable regiment. And “regimen” and “regiment” are in fact very closely related etymologically; as far as the OED is concerned, both words can mean “government” or “rule.” For most English speakers today, however, “regiment” will usually denote a large body of troops, so I’d argue that the use of the term in the drug sense is potentially eggcornish. Examples:

Prostate care for EP usually begins with a regiment of drugs called 5-alpha reductase inhibitors or 5ARIs.

Antiretroviral therapy is a treatment consisting of a regiment of drugs, which work against HIV by slowing down the reproduction of HIV in the body, reducing the viral load and repairing damage to the immune system.

Dr. Pranzatelli recognized Brenden’s symptoms immediately and began to prescribe a regiment of drugs to fight the tumor.”

Computerized physician order entry also known as CPOE is the prescribing from the drug regiment into a computerized system by a physician or other authorized prescriber.

Re: "drug regiment" for "drug regimen"

Very interesting! Add to this the fact that “regimented” means disciplined or even difficulty or grueling. A person could be on a very regimented drug regimen. It’s easy to see how the two would blur in people’s minds. Definitely eggcornish, I would say.

Feeling quite combobulated.
