Having just seen some petroglyphs while on vacation in Hawaii, I wondered if some people might have made the assumption since such carvings are sometimes on steep stone walls, that they might be called petrocliffs:
travel site “A relatively close state park with interesting rock formations and petrocliffs often overlooked. ”
travel site “Here you find numerous historical man stone’s and petrocliffs.”
travel forum There are also many petrocliffs (Indian carvings and writings on rocks).
Another spelling variation, perhaps inspired by the ancient city of Petra: Photo caption “Ancient Petracliff markings”
Only found one example of “hirocliffs” (and one perhaps joking “hierocliffs”) “She writes something in her hirocliffs on the whiteboard. ”

A compelling substitution. Leading to a bad redundancy (petrocliff = “rock-rock”).
Hatching new language, one eggcorn at a time.
