As soon as I googled this one, I found it on an old list of ‘also-ran’ eggcorns posted by Pat in 2006. (http://eggcorns.lascribe.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=525).
It works well. To be taxonomically correct, a Sea Lion is not a ‘true’ Seal, but they’re pretty close.
The Californian Seal Lion was once killed in great numbers for their blubber, which could be made into oil, and the rest could be made into dog food.
