lumbering up

I found this on the BBC news site and it appealed to me.

“And lumbering up for what it hopes will be a fresh start is the once-mighty Research in Motion with its new Blackberry 10 software.”

It sounds so much more robust that limbering. It suggests putting something pretty heavyweight in place – but being a great deal less nimble.

Re: lumbering up

This could be one of those cases in which the opposite sense plays a role. “Lumber” and “limber” can have opposing connotations. See our earlier discussions.

Hatching new language, one eggcorn at a time.
