solstick, stonehinge

Welcome to the 2012 winter solstick:

Beadwof does a short victory dance. Short, because “solstick” only occurs two or three times on the web. You can, however, find this creative spelling in William Bourne’s 1574 A Regiment for the Sea Conteyning Most Profitable Rules, Mathematical Experiences, and Perfect Knovvledge of Nauigation, for All Coastes and Countreys: Most Needefull and Necessarie for All Seafaring Men and Trauellers, so this non-hiker has long legs.

The solstice this year corresponds with what is being called the “Mayan apocalypse,” so the usual solstice crowd at Stonehenge has expanded. Quite a large number of people write the name of this ancient site as “stonehinge.” Do they think that the mammoth lintels are hinged to the sarsen stones? (“Henge” and “hinge” may have the same Teutonic source, but “henge” is more closely related to the root semantics of “hang,” while “hinge” has taken on the sense of a one-way mechanical articulation.)

Re: solstick, stonehinge

This accident prone Ph.D. candidate thinks it’s Stonehedge. Stonehedge is in the caption and in the filename.

So does this guy.

Stonehedge. Perhaps he had a cold the day he wrote that.
