"depose of" for "dispose of"

I’d never seen this one before today, but it seems to be rampant, particularly in the context of motor oil. This is one where the misheard term does have a related meaning to the correct term, though ironically “depose” is the more sophisticated of the two notions relating to getting rid of something.

For example, “If mealy bugs have infested the roots, it is best just to depose of the plant and start fresh.”

I have seen it at these sites… hopefully the links work:

Does this qualify?

Re: "depose of" for "dispose of"

Maaaybe. The fact that a less common term (“depose”) is replacing a more common term (“dispose”) argues for it being a typo or malapropism.

Re: "depose of" for "dispose of"

Don’t know why I didn’t think to check two years ago, but there are plenty of examples running in the other (correct) direction. These may be eggcorns.

Examples:

Review of movie: “ By doing so, the devious cardinal plots to unleash war on the European Continent, and in the process plans to dispose the King and Queen of France,”

Online history of Punjab: “A coalition of chiefs formed at Lahore to dispose the king,”

Book review: “ Disillusioned with aspects of the King’s rule, in August 1972 her father orchestrated a failed coup attempt to dispose the King.”
