After seeing it in a chat room, I started out looking for instances for it donged on me before discovering that, regrettably, it had already been collected. So I expanded my search. First, a number of hits from the UK reformulate the idiom and suggest that dire tidings overtook me and I had no means of escape from the realization: it doomed on me.
my stomach and mouth hit the floor then it doomed on me that he could have killed me

when I picked it up I thought oh that’s a bit heavy for a children’s toy and then it doomed on me that it was a real tool kit complete with hammer and spanner.

Earlier today I was out and about, running errands and this and that. When I tilted my head up, I suddenly noticed this dark cloud in the otherwise fairly bright sky. Moments later it doomed on me that here is the vast sky and all I am noticing is one dark cloud…

They bought me a cycle, I was chuffed, used it for a year and then it doomed on me that they bought me a ladies bike

Other simblings are equally cute. My fave is it darned on me. ... Well, I’ll be darned. Or my socks will. But I also like it downed on me, as if it came down upon me and shone round about me.
I was reading a piece of encouragement online about cookie exchange at church, and then it darned on me…. duh!

I thought I was out of remission for longer than usual, but then it downed on me that I ran out of VIT. D.

Speaking of shining and dawn’s illumination …
I felt anguish that I hadn’t felt in years, I wanted to end it all for a moment. But then it shined on me, I have an opportunity where I can make you pay, I want you to physically feel what I have felt inside

Here’s a modest way of describing your dawning comprehension: it dumbed on me.
For a minute I thought this was a tough choice….then it dumbed on me. The Chiefs?.....AT NEW ENGLAND?

What a great cluster. I also found examples of “drawned,” “drowned,” and “domed,” though none of those seemed quite eggcornish enough to bother documenting. And then of course there’s “donned,” which is already in the ECDB. Of the ones you’ve presented here, I think I find “darned” the most endearing.
I wonder how it ever occurred to you to go looking for “it shined on me.” Even if I had somehow thought of it, I think my internal censor would have said, “Nah, don’t bother—that’s too far from the acorn to exist in the wild.”

Ha, that one came about through the series “came down upon them and shone round about them > it shoned on me (no hits) > it shone on me (hits) > it shined on me (more interesting hits)”. Here are some of the “it shone on me” hits:
At first it seemed to me awkward-but-why-not, then it shone on me: this actually begins like a gay movie.

It shone on him that he was leaving tomorrow and that he never again would be there when she needed him.

It drowned on me is great. A much stronger image than mere dawning.
I could feel my face cracking slightly due to the dried tears, that’s when reality drowned on me. I have been crying on Nathan’s neck all along.

Dawning seems to be a difficult metaphor for some to grasp, given the number of alternative images out there. Here’s another, surprisingly common, that is phonetically plausible but grammatically strained: it daunt/daunted on me. It must be being understood as “The realization daunted me”. There are several dozen of each of these forms.
In the metro, we got in a huge fight about politics as we always do, and it daunt on me why it pisses me off so much that you don’t see the world like I do.

it was only then that it daunt on me that OMG HE ACTUALLY FLIES A FREAKING PLANE!

And then it daunted on me: Too much planning resulted in a feeling of “are we having fun yet?â€.

Then it daunted on me. WHY AM I IN A ROOM? WHERE THE HELL AM I?

And another variation: I just found 18 unique eggcornish examples of “it drawn on me”! A few examples:
It drawn on me while in conversation with my mum today that there is only 35 days left till christmas.
I remember that as i sat down it drawn on me,this is my dreams and my plan shattering away in a twinkle of an eye…
Then it drawn on me that discipline played an important role in this as well.
But then I just started walking and it drawn on me I am actual doing it and I realize wouldn’t as been able to do this without spark.
That last one is also interesting for the substitution of “wouldn’t as” for “wouldn’t have”.
