Seen in a news story today:
Evolution news: “This fossil bird represents the closest we’ve gotten to the point where swifts and hummingbirds went their separate waves” (though the news release linked to says “ways” instead.)
Waves of populations are often mentioned in stories on evolution as creatures with beneficial mutations replace less competitive creatures.
In a fan-fic about surfing, the characters take the following action:
Power Rangers fan-fic: “After a few minutes of conversations, they went their separate waves.”
Perhaps this is intended as a pun.
Hand gestures are another rationale:
Fan-fic forum: “Tris nodded, waving to his workers as they went their separate waves.”
Ocean-going vacations seem a likely place to encounter different strokes:
Cruise advice: “Because of this, the whole family can enjoy themselves together, or go their seperate waves.”

I could sort of see “go their separate waves” having something to do with waving goodbye, maybe.
I checked “waves and means committee” to see if there was more general confusion, but didn’t see any.
“Weighs and Means committee”, however, definitely has a few adherents. Which would make sense if it were a committee on standards rather than budgeting..

Budgeting does (or at least should) saliently involve weighing the options.

we would be too simple-minded to understand it* .
