A number of web writers render “cameo,†the word for a small, sometimes hidden/undocumented, appearance in a media event (think about the surreptitious walk-ons of the director Alfred Hitchcock in his own movies), as “camo,†a popular nickname for a fabric with camouflage coloration. Could they be importing the meaning of the latter into the former? Cameo appearances can be camouflaged appearances.
Movie description: “Jack Riley recorded a camo appearance for the episode “Days of Whine and Neuroses” as his Bob Newhart character Elliot Karlinâ€
Comment on YouTube video: “And even Makaio makes a camo appearance â€
Description of TV episode: “Wolfgang Puck has a camo role as a celebrity judge in a cooking competitionâ€
Soccer site: “get phil wallace in as a camo role, sitting in the crowd cheeringâ€
Hatching new language, one eggcorn at a time.

Although camo role could be a typo, here’s a hit that seems to support your interpreation.
