I received this in an email the other day:
i just got this message (more than a day late) because i’m on a road trip and have my first Y-FI connection in several days.
I doubt it’s actually an eggcorn for anyone, as I can’t imagine a plausible meaning-connection offhand. I emailed my friend Lani, from whom the quote came, asking her what the “Y” in “Y-FI” stands for, and she graciously replied:
actually, i should have said WiFi …. for “wireless fidelity”. I spelled it like it sounds (Y-FI) but that’s cuz i’m ignorant! Apparently it’s WiFi. Now i know!
So for her, definitely a misspelling, not an eggcorn. A random sample of a few pages of Google hits only yielded puns, and acronyms such as “Young Filipinos”, and “Young Fashion Industry”. But I got a little chuckle out of this one anyway.
