Nick of the woods

He must be a Canadian, right? I ran across this recasting of neck of the woods in a travel review:

Chino took us back to his nick of the woods, Calitone, next to Playa Larga and invited us for lunch.

There are roughly 500 unique hits, give or take. A nick of the woods might be a notch, a cut, a clearing, a hideout, a place to nick into? Or maybe this is a blend with a nick of time. ‘Nick’ is an old word with multiple guises, according to MichaelQuinion, so we can’t go too far afield on this one or we’ll never find our way back.

Edit: Hold on, you don’t knick in, you nip in. Only one lonely other soul has made this confusion:

what the hell is going on folks? anything strange in your nip of the woods?

Re: Nick of the woods

Fun one. Niche (pronounced and sometimes spelled nitch ) in there too?

Your hungry, curious brain cells drive you forever forward to snoop around in your niche of the woods. You are driven to snoop around,

in my own niche of the woods our legacy lives thank you for heeding my plea nature’s beauty, here to stay.

Father’s brother George, started on this trip with two covered wagons and all they owned to make a home in this nitch of the woods.

and many more.
