The word “yeoman,†a variation of “young man,†has been spelled many ways over the centuries. When English ended its period of orthographical creativity in the 1600s, authorities converged on the “yeo-“ spelling.
In world English, as it is represented on the billions of web pages, a measure of creativity has returned. “Yeoman,†it seems, is commonly spelled as “yoman.†One wonders, though, whether there is some influence from the slang expression “Yo! Man!†This expression, if memory serves, entered everyday speech through the black lingo of the 70s. (Adventure Time fans can tune in to the phrase here.)
Hatching new language, one eggcorn at a time.
