echolades << accolades

The word “accolade” has col, neck in it. The con-neck-shun is the knighthood ceremony, which included, in certain places and times, an embrace. Accolade as a knighting term is now obsolete—in modern English an accolade is extravagant praise.

When the praise makes the hall ring with hurrahs, it’s an echolade:

Tour guide recommendation: “Nothing but Kudos and Echolades

Dentist recommendation: “No complaints, only echolades for all!”

Aussie sports forum: “Bottom line is that the team is not a one man team but solid throughout its roster hence the spread of end of the season echolades for the individual players”
