You could say I was always keen on mum. Growing up, mom was an americanism that no one I knew used. That is no longer the case. Mom has taken over. Look at the mom-mum ngrams. Some might spell it mom but pronounce it mum. That would explain the cases of ‘keeping Mom about’ something, and ‘Shhh, Mom’s the word’, neither of which make much sense.
