A “scot” originally meant a fine, tax or levy, or one individual’s contribution to the cost of an entertainment. The word’s meaning is utterly opaque now, and the authors of the following examples seem to feel that the persons in question might so completely escape the consequences of their actions that no one will scoff at them for their deeds.
