The current week’s offerings from the A.Word.A.Day people mention the confusion between “selfie,†a picture of oneself taken by oneself, usually with a cellphone camera, and “cellphie.â€
The confusion was also noted recently by Geoffrey K. Pullum in the Language Log, where Pullum tries to make a loose connection between the eggcorn and an expanded meaning of “selfie†that refers to any picture taken with a cell phone.
Many examples on the web of “cellphie.†One of them is a confession:
Comment on travel blog: “I first heard [selfie] long before I ever saw it written. They’re usually made with cellphones and so I thought the word was cellphie. â€
Hatching new language, one eggcorn at a time.
