‘Hook Line and Stinker’ is the title of a Roadrunner cartoon and the phrase is often used knowingly. But there seem to be a lot of innocent users as well. In the modified version, the original connection with fishing is lost. The connotation is that one is accepting or swallowing an objectionable or ‘stinking’ item. Examples-
