breaking bounds

(If this has already been discussed I did not find it.)

Break The Bounds Of Flesh And Blood by Pagan Records, released 12 April 2014.

let’s break the bounds of how society says we should live.

After all there was intense satisfaction to Kate in having broken all bounds and done as she pleased.

Fowler’s actions surely broke the bounds of what is acceptable.

If existential phenomenology broke the bounds of Husserl’s transcendental idealism, in its application of phenomenological procedures to the problems of the lived body, intersubjectivity and human freedom, Ricoeur’s phenomenology opens the way for a second breaking of the bounds under the sign of hermeneutics.

(Many other exx., many published in edited works.)
.
I suppose normally we break bonds and transgress, go outside of, break (out) through/from, erase/obliterate, etc., bound(arie)s. But both bounds and bonds, however restrict our freedoms, the latter obviously more drastically, and we may well want to break anything that so hampers us and opposes our desires.
.
This is one of those that is so very old, widespread and reasonable that it may be taken not as an eggcorn at all but rather as an independent legitimate construction. After all, if everyone from hacks to great writers can use it, who am I to cavil?

Why hast thou, Satan, broke the bounds prescribed To thy transgressions, and disturbed the charge Of others, who approve not to transgress

What Milton hath cleansed, call thou not eggcornish.
.
But I still think it somehow is. (So am I beyond the pail, having busted the bounds?)

*If the human mind were simple enough for us to understand,
we would be too simple-minded to understand it* .

(Possible Corollary: it is, and we are .)

I think I’m in this camp. A Google Ngram of “break the bonds” and “break the bounds” shows that both idioms have been in regular use for two centuries. Before the nineteenth century, “bounds” in the sense of the borders of a property (cf. the old custom “beating the bounds”) would have lent sense to the idiom of “breaking the bounds” (i.e., going outside the boundaries).
