No, really. This query was posted to an Eggcorn group on Facebook. I told the poster about the Eggcorn Forum, but since registrations are closed agreed to post it here for him. Here goes:
“Is there a term to describe errors such as, “It speaks records of…” instead of, “It speaks volumes of…” or “By no means necessary,” which is, of course, a combination of “By no means” and “By any means necessary”? They’re not eggcorns, but they’re also not malapropisms, since malapropisms are erroneous words or phrases that are pronounced similarly to the correct words they replace.”
I should probably know this, but the right word isn’t coming to mind. Thanks for any help!
