I heard this in an online interview; it is also out there in written form.

The second tape was brandished as a fake.

It’s a reasonable eggcorn: brandishing is a kind of public display of its object, and so is branding. It might also be a blend, at least in some cases, of “brand” with “tarnish” or perhaps “flourish” or something like that.
